ALDERSGATE CONVENTION 2011 will be held at Toa Payoh Methodist Church from May 20 to 23, and the key event – a new feature – will be the Evangelistic Rally on Saturday, May 21 starting at 5 pm.
The Rev Dr Eddie Fox, World Director of Evangelism of the World Methodist Council, will be the speaker. This is the first time that such a rally will be held as part of the annual Aldersgate Convention since the current series was launched in 2002.
“CHRIST JESUS – GOD’S YES TO THE WORLD” is the title of his message, which will focus on the heart of the Gospel.
The Rev Dr Fox said that the Good News is that “God has said ‘yes’ to us first and invites our response of ‘yes’ in faith and trust”.
“This is the heart of the matter and we pray that it will be a matter in our hearts. Christ Jesus is the ‘yes’ to all of God’s Promises,” added the Rev Dr Fox, who will make an altar call at the end of his message.
The Evangelistic Rally Sub-committee has put in place an action plan which will involve the participation of counsellors and intercessors.
Prayer cards have been distributed to all the churches, and each member is encouraged to invite five people, especially pre-believers, to attend the rally. The theme for this year’s Convention is “Go and Tell: Proclaiming the Gospel Today”.
It will begin with the well-loved Hymn Festival to be held on May 20 from 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm. This year’s Festival will see greater lay participation with the ordinary church members leading in the service.
Hymn-singing will be augmented by the use of descants, varied harmonic accompaniments and hymn anthems. A variety of instrumental accompaniments, including strings, woodwinds and brass, will be used to add interest.
A part of the service will be set aside for the congregation’s silent meditation, and personal commitment for a deeper walk in the Christian’s journey.
To ensure a church-wide participation, a 100-voice festival choir is being formed with choristers from all Methodist Churches.
The Rev Dr Fox will also speak at these events:
• The Aldersgate anksgiving Service on May 22, from 5 pm to 7 pm: His message is entitled “Ambassadors of the Good News”. “We are called to spread the Good News of the Gospel by Word, Deed and Sign in the power of the Holy Spirit so that the world may know Jesus Christ,” he said.
• The Aldersgate Lecture on May 23, from 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm: “The Wesleyan Way of Revival”.
“We, the people called Methodists, are followers of Jesus in the company of the Wesleys. John Wesley made it clear the Wesleyan Way for the Methodist Movement is to be alive, vibrant and growing.”
In addition, the Rev Dr Fox will address pastors on May 23 at 9 am.
A book stall will be set up during the Convention to sell books jointly written by the Rev Dr Fox and Senior Professor George Morris as well as books on Methodism by other authors.
All the events will be held at Toa Payoh Methodist Church. As there are limited car park lots in the church grounds, all those who are coming are encouraged to use the MRT and alight at Toa Payoh Station. ose who want to drive may park at the nearby HDB multi-storey car park (see site map).
